Recovery varies by treatment area and procedure extent. LITTLE Lipo® and neck liposuction may also be combined with Renuvion when additional skin tightening is appropriate.

Awake liposuction describes the anesthesia experience, while laser lipo refers to a heat-based device. VIPS uses Renuvion J-Plasma for skin tightening instead. Your consultation will help determine which technique, or combination of techniques, best fits your anatomy and goals.

Traditional liposuction may be recommended when a patient wants to address larger or multiple treatment areas. The anesthesia, recovery, and amount of fat removed will depend on the extent of the personalized procedure.

LITTLE Liposuction & Awake Liposuction

With LITTLE Lipo®, Dr. Burton and Dr. Reps Sundin use local anesthesia and small entry points to remove unwanted fat while you remain awake and comfortable. This in-office approach can help appropriately selected patients avoid general anesthesia and return to their routines sooner.

Neck Liposuction

Neck liposuction targets localized fat beneath the chin and along the upper neck to create a cleaner jawline and more balanced profile. If loose skin contributes more to your concerns than excess fat, your surgeon may recommend adding skin tightening or considering another neck-contouring option.

Renuvion J-Plasma Skin Tightening

Renuvion J-Plasma uses helium plasma and RF energy to contract tissue beneath the skin after fat removal. It isn’t a laser, and it works at a much lower temperature than older laser lipo devices, which is why VIPS uses it for skin tightening.

What You Can Expect Before, During & After Liposuction

Before Your Procedure: You’ll meet one-on-one with Dr. Burton Sundin or Dr. Reps Sundin to discuss the areas you want to change, review your health history, and compare the liposuction techniques that fit your goals. Your surgeon will explain how to prepare and what you can realistically expect from treatment.
During Your Procedure: Your anesthesia and treatment time will depend on the technique and number of areas being addressed. Smaller LITTLE Lipo® procedures may take around 30 minutes, while larger or multiple areas may take up to two hours. When awake liposuction is appropriate, local anesthesia is used to keep you comfortable without general anesthesia.
After Your Procedure: You’ll wear a compression garment to help control swelling and support your developing contours. Many patients return to work and light activity within 3–5 days after a smaller procedure, although recovery varies by treatment area and extent. Your shape will continue to become more visible as swelling subsides over the following weeks and months.

Is SmartLipo the same as awake liposuction?

No. Awake liposuction describes a procedure performed under local anesthesia while you remain awake, while SmartLipo is a specific laser-assisted liposuction technology. SmartLipo may be performed using local anesthesia, but the terms describe different aspects of treatment.

Can neck liposuction improve a double chin?

Neck liposuction can remove localized fat beneath the chin and create a cleaner transition between the jawline and neck. It works best when excess fat is the primary concern and the skin has enough elasticity to adapt to the new contour.

Will liposuction tighten loose skin?

Liposuction removes fat but does not automatically tighten loose skin. Some patients have enough natural elasticity for their skin to settle smoothly, while others may benefit from an additional tissue-tightening treatment such as Renuvion.
