Types of Liposuction and How Our Approach Differs

Most liposuction falls into a few main types. Tumescent liposuction numbs and firms the area with a saline and lidocaine solution before fat is removed through a thin tube called a cannula. Laser-assisted liposuction uses laser heat to melt fat first, which can make removal smoother and help tighten skin. Ultrasound-assisted liposuction, often called VASER, uses sound waves to break up dense or fibrous fat. Traditional liposuction is often done under general anesthesia, with a longer recovery.

From Consultation to Results: Your Liposuction Timeline

Before Your Procedure: During your consultation with Dr. Burton Sundin or Dr. Reps Sundin, you’ll discuss your goals, your anatomy, and which liposuction approach fits you best. We’ll walk you through the details, review your medical history, and help you feel fully prepared for surgery day. You’ll also get clear prep steps, like which medications and supplements to pause and arranging a ride home.
During Your Liposuction: Depending on your treatment plan, your procedure may last 30 minutes to two hours. Here’s how it works: we mark your treatment areas while you’re standing, then give you light oral sedation to help you relax. Next, we numb each area with a tumescent solution of saline and lidocaine. Through tiny incisions, a thin cannula gently loosens and removes fat, and if Renuvion is part of your plan, it tightens skin from underneath. You stay awake the whole time, and most patients feel pressure or tugging rather than pain. We perform most lipo procedures right in our office under local anesthesia, and you’ll be able to head home shortly after.
After Your Procedure: You’ll wear a compression garment for a few days to control swelling and support your new contours. We encourage walking starting the day after your procedure. Many patients return to work and light movement in 3–5 days. Most patients get back to their normal exercise routine within one to two weeks. Swelling goes down noticeably over four to six weeks, and your final contours show at around three months.
